What to order at LOI Cafe: katsu, small plates and the drinks list

LOI Cafe is the café at Loi Mansion, a warm, wood-lined room serving chicken katsu with seven sauces, small plates to share, and coffee, Thai tea and matcha. The menu is compact, so ordering mostly comes down to one question: which sauce. Here is a guide to the plates, the extras and the drinks, with a few easy orders to start from.

The katsu plates and their seven sauces

Every main course follows the same format: rice, chicken katsu and salad, with the sauce that gives the plate its name.

• Chicken Katsu Curry, with curry sauce
• Chicken Katsu Nanban, with nanban sauce
• Chicken Katsu Buffalo, with buffalo sauce
• Chicken Katsu Tare, with tare sauce
• Chicken Katsu Salted Egg, with salted egg sauce
• Chicken Katsu Honey Butter, with honey butter sauce
• Chicken Katsu Honey Mustard, with honey mustard sauce

If you are new to katsu, curry is the classic Japanese pairing and an easy first order. Nanban and tare also come from Japanese cooking, buffalo and honey mustard will be familiar from chicken wings, and salted egg is a much-loved flavour across Southeast Asia.

Two extras make the menu more flexible: you can add an egg, and you can order extra sauce in any flavour. The second one solves the hardest decision on the menu. If two sauces tempt you, order one plate and add the other as an extra sauce.

Appetizers to share

The appetizers are crisp bites for the table, and three of them carry sauces from the main course, so they are a good way to try a flavour before you commit to a full plate:

• Chicken Wings Honey Mustard
• Mini Wonton Salted Egg

The menu also has French Fries and a Mix Platter. With a group, a few appetizers in the middle of the table and a spread of different katsu sauces make an easy shared meal.

The drinks list

The coffee bar covers the classics: Latte, Cappuccino, Americano and Espresso, plus a Spanish Latte. Beyond coffee, it also pours Teh Tarik, Thai Tea, Green Thai Tea and a Matcha Latte, along with Iced Tea and Milo Dinosaur.

Teh Tarik and Milo Dinosaur are Southeast Asian café favourites, worth a try if you have not had them before. With a katsu lunch, an Iced Tea or a Thai Tea is a natural match; for a slower moment after a swim or a massage, a Latte or a Matcha Latte.

Three easy orders

If you would rather not think about it, start from one of these combinations, all built from the current menu.

• On your own, for a quick lunch: one katsu plate with the sauce of your choice and an Iced Tea.
• For two: two katsu plates with different sauces, Chicken Wings Honey Mustard to share, a Thai Tea and a Spanish Latte.
• For a group: the Mix Platter, Mini Wonton Salted Egg and Chicken Popcorn Nanban Sauce for the table, then katsu plates with a spread of sauces, and an extra sauce for anyone who cannot decide.

Eating in after a day out

Because LOI Cafe is in the house, a good meal does not need another ride. After a morning at Double Six Beach, about 3.6 km by road, or a few hours at Seminyak Village, about 4.2 km by road, you can come back for a quick bite or a long, easy lunch without looking for a table elsewhere. Even with a kitchen in every suite, it is good to have LOI Cafe in the house for the days when you would rather not cook.
